American Companies’ Paid Time Off is Paltry Compared to Global Counterparts

The Average American PTO: The U.S. falls short with an average of just 10 days of PTO annually. In contrast, countries like France and Germany serve up a whopping 30 days.
- Cultural Differences: In America, taking a day off often comes with a side of guilt. Meanwhile, in countries like Spain, they have siestas! A civilized midday break to rest, reflect, and come back to work refreshed and energized.
- Hoarding Vacation Days: Americans are notorious for saving their PTO like a squirrel stocks up for winter. A recent study found that 55% of vacation days go unused each year. Many companies have a “use it, or lose it” policy, so don’t leave this hard-earned benefit on the table.
- Health Benefits: A study showed that companies offering generous PTO see lower turnover rates and increased productivity. So, while we’re busy breaking records for work hours, the rest of the globe is breaking records for relaxation.
Rest is Not Optional
If you don’t honor your mind and body with time to rest and recuperate from the stressful and intense realities of life and career, your body will shut down and it won’t be at a convenient time.
The culture shift to living your best life and career starts with you. In the season of ubiquitous summer vacations, take your time off to allow your body to rejuvenate and replenish. Whether you travel or enjoy a staycation, it all starts with you.
The likelihood of US companies providing more time off to employees is slim when so many people don’t take advantage of the time off they are given now.
Don’t be a PTO Loser
When I was in the height of burnout, I didn’t take my PTO and my health, and wellbeing suffered. As a burnout survivor, I’m on a mission to work hard, play hard, and to rest and recuperate. In the spirit of honoring down time – I’m excited to enjoy my summer vacation and stay unplugged for the next few weeks. I truly enjoy my career and now I also prioritize time to love my life. See you in a few weeks!
