Ask For What You Want
I have yet to meet a boss who is a mind reader and it’s important for employees to be empowered with the reality that they should ask for what they want. The worst thing that can happen is that your boss will say no – but you’ll never get it if you don’t ask.
Be clear about what your goals are in your organization and be ready to discuss them with your boss on a regular basis even beyond your scheduled performance review. Some bosses don’t check-in with employees unless there is something on fire. You may be doing such a good job at work that you go unnoticed because you don’t cause any problems. Never assume that your boss is in charge of growing your career – that responsibility falls entirely upon you.
Most employees color within the lines and follow the rules. While I’m not encouraging you to do anything illegal, I am asking you to push the envelope and ask for your new ideas or proposals to be considered. There may be a standard protocol for pay increases, for example, but change means progress and your new initiative may be raise worthy. If you break the status quo by challenging the existing rules you may also showcase your leadership potential.
Remember, you are judged on results, not effort so be ready to talk about how you positively affect the bottom line or the strategic mission of your organization. You should develop your employment security by achieving results, growing your network, and establishing a positive reputation.
You should be rewarded for your innovation and creativity so don’t be afraid to speak up and ask for what you want. You may be surprised at how easy it is to get what you want if you just ask for it!
