Breaking Free: How To Get Out Of A Job You Hate

Nobody wants to end up stuck in a rut. For many of us, the idea of toiling away every day at a job that we hate just to pay the bills sounds like a nightmare. That’s what makes it so tragic that so many people end up doing just that. Life can often find a way of making things challenging and sometimes you do end up getting stuck somewhere you didn’t want to be. Sometimes it can be for financial reasons, at times those reasons are more personal. But whatever it is, it doesn’t need to be that way forever. There are plenty of ways to get you out of that rut and into a life that you can really enjoy. Here are just a few of them.
Figure Out Your Skill Set
Okay, so you’ve decided you have to get out of your dead-end job. Great! But most of us can’t just tell our boss what we think of them and walk out. You need something to move on to. Now, the last thing you want is just to go from one awful job to another. In an ideal world, you want to find something that you’re passionate about and follow it. To do that you need to figure out your skill set. If you’re a university graduate, then you’ve probably already got a solid skill set around your chosen subject. If you’re not a graduate, then don’t worry because there are surely skills you’ve developed in your current job. Time management, teamwork, independence, goal setting. All these things are skills that employers want to see and they’re skills you probably already have.
Develop Skills You Don’t Yet Have
If you want to get away from your job but you don’t have certain skills that you need then don’t worry. There are tons of ways that you can develop your skills in your free time. Online courses are a great place to start, but you can develop a lot of skills on your own as well. If it’s for a particular piece of software, then there are thousands of tutorials online for just about everything. Filling in those gaps will make it that much easier to move out of your dead end job and into something that you’re passionate about.
Play the Waiting Game
It’s sad to say, but there’s a pretty decent chance you’re still going to be stuck in your job for a little while. Unless you get lucky, you’re not going to fall into your perfect job in an instant. That means that you’ve got to figure out ways to deal with the job you have for a while. Think of every day as a step closer to what you really want. Treat everything you come up against as a skill building and learning experience. Change your focus and think about your time more productively. That way you’ll be able to turn a pointless job into one that’s taking you closer to what you want. And don’t forget, it’s not forever so just hang in there.
